Electroacupuncture: procedure, application and contraindications

Electroacupuncture is an innovative method that combines acupuncture and electrotherapy. Acupuncture, which involves the precise placement of needles in acupuncture points, is combined with electrotherapy, where a mild current is applied through special needles. It is important to note that needles of a similar diameter as diabetic needles are used, which reduces the feeling of discomfort during the treatment.

Two ways of performing electroacupuncture treatment, with and without needles:

Finding acupuncture points and precise placement of needles depending on the treated area. Electrodes are attached to needles, which are used exclusively for electroacupuncture. All the time, care is taken that the patient feels a pleasant sensation, in relation to whether the effect of pain reduction or muscle relaxation is desired. The individualization of the treatment according to the patient’s needs usually takes 15-20 minutes, with the possibility of combining it with other physical therapy procedures.

No needles. Electroacupuncture can be performed without needle insertion, focusing only on stimulation.

Application in frequent cases:

• Neck pain: Muscle spasm, limited movement, feeling of heaviness in the neck.
• Headache caused by cervical spine.
• Shoulder pain: periarthritis, frozen shoulder, muscle and tendon injuries, sports injuries, calcification.
• Tensiki elbow, golfer’s elbow.
• Wrist injuries: metacarpal tunnel syndrome, pain or tingling in the hand.
• Pain in the thoracic spine: Spasm of the trapezius muscle, myogelosis.
• Lumbar spine: Lumbar syndrome, sciatica, piriformis syndrome, muscle spasm.
• Knee after injuries: rehabilitation, preoperative preparation, recovery of tendons, muscles, ligaments, rehabilitation of the Achilles tendon, plantar fascia at the heel spur.

Contraindications:
Some conditions are not suitable for electroacupuncture, including pacemakers, pregnancy, acute bleeding and fear of needles.
